Increasingly, the role of District SIS administrator or manager is becoming more visible in public school districts and this role may be organizationally placed within the IT Department or within the Instructional Division, thereby recognizing the dual purpose of SIS systems as both instructional support and administrative information management systems. From the SIS administrator’s point of view, the SIS is the service engine for his/her customer base, which in today's and tomorrow's world includes virtually every employee within the school district, plus parents, students and the community at-large. The Synergy® Student Information System (SIS) meets the District SIS administrator’s needs by:
- Providing a highly available SIS, virtually 24x7 since most system level functions can be performed without knocking users off the system. No longer does the administrator need exclusive system access for long periods of time for operational maintenance items such as system backups, new year rollover, user defined data creation, view customizations, etc. – in a Synergy™ installation all of these activities happen while the system is running and in use. Configuration parameters can be established which enforce district wide conformity with coding and validation rules where appropriate, while also allowing school level flexibility where appropriate.
- Providing security capabilities which can allow, if sanctioned by district policy, school staff members to view students’ data for their school, or for their schools’ feeder relationship, or for the entire district. If the Synergy® Special Education (SE) module has also been implemented, this opening up of student data can also be extended between regular and Special Education, since Synergy SIS / Synergy SE are supported by one centralized database.
- Providing viewing, ad-hoc query, and ad-hoc reporting capabilities, which provide school and district staff with the access to longitudinal student related data directly from their workstations, thus reducing the need to print and distribute most reports. Synergy enables the reversal of the historical business model of printing and then distributing reports by providing the capability to first distribute data and then print locally only what’s actually needed in paper form.
